Auditorium and Opera House, Malaga

PROJECT REPORT

The Málaga Auditorium sits beside the sea in the ‘San Andrés Esplanade’ area. Covering an area of 31,354 m², the building’s placement here recovers a part of Malaga’s maritime façade. The building stands out as an end point to the succession of beaches leading south, being the first building of the harbour. This is the origin of its hard, independent character and its almost formless exterior section.

The building’s privileged location suggests the presence of an ‘outdoor foyer’, an area with terraces whose uses could be related to the shows themselves or for a bar, restaurant or performance space. A separate entrance from the boardwalk allows direct access to the upper level.

Access to the building and its external activities are centred on the great atrium, whose sharp, exacting geometry stands in stark contrast against the imprecise, almost shapeless exterior form, an open cut running through the body of the building. This gesture contributes to its very distinctive shape, framing the sea view as we approach from the city. Both in the theatre and the concert hall, shapes have been chosen to guarantee the best acoustics; in the specific case of the theatre, an almost Italian-style arrangement brings the audience as close as possible to the show.

The planned building is characterised by contrast. The imprecise exterior form in wood that will darken with time stands in opposition to the aluminium and glass of the atrium that cuts through the building, concentrating the entrances and marking a precise view over the sea.
