City of Justice, Jaén

PROJECT REPORT

This project proposes to conserve practically all of the archeological site, which will become a wide, solemn entryway to the building. A practically opaque raised floor on supports whose placement will respect the archeological finds and contain secondary facilities like the car park, detainee areas or the archives, acts to protect the new public space and as a structural base supporting the rest of the building.

Its benefits are obvious from the perspective of preserving discoveries as well as in terms of creating a new place, different to the general residential character of the sector, and more in accordance with the public character that the new building requires.

From the large space created below the building, moving walkways cross the car park, leading users along a somewhat ceremonial path to the great longitudinal entrance hall with its high ceilings, and access to the courtroom and to the more public services, from the civil registry to the auditorium and the coffee shop. After going through a second security gate, the public can access the upper floors, almost completely occupied by the Courts and departments attached to them.

From restricted access areas, the judges and prosecutors can enter the Courtrooms without passing through public areas. Overall, this draft has aimed to be extremely respectful with the very specific conditions involved in this type of program, such as the aspects mentioned above regarding access and the different passages through the building.
