Music National Center, Dance and Conservatory, The Hague

PROJECT REPORT

We propose an architecture that is quiet, compact and horizontal, as opposed to the current image of the area formed by a succession of towers or, at least, buildings with a strong desire for uniqueness. We seek an architecture as low and horizontal as possible, avoiding excesses, and suggesting a building more compact and quiet than iconic.

The subdivision of the total volume into two separate and overlapping parts tries to highlight this aspect. While the lower part of the building will be more tectonic and pay more attention to the surroundings, the upper part aspires to be immaterial and light, like a horizontal sign that identifies the building from a certain distance.

The access to the atrium of the Music and Dance Centre lies on the axis of the Nieuwe Kerk and tries to act as an alternative way to connect Turfmarkt and Spuiplein. The facade is a deep and powerful frame, always oriented towards the church as a way to recognize and accept its important urban role.

Acting as the boundary between the lower and upper volumes, an open floor with a semi-public character generates an open garden in summer, which can be covered in winter, providing a bright courtyard around which the various uses of the conservatory of Music and Dance are arranged.
