PROJECT REPORT

This is a unique contest whose main purpose is related to the detection of architectural problems caused by new use, and the resolution of these problems with technical expertise and maximum constructive and economic efficiency. The existing building is a lesson in field architecture in and of itself: the direct expression of necessities through construction. The adaptation of the building, from the logistics centre of a large commercial company to the deposits of the National Historical Archive (AHN) and the Centre of State Museum Collections (CCME), must be carried out in accordance with the minimum conditions required by new uses in terms of security, climate control, logistics, accessibility and nature; these necessities differ greatly from what was previously needed for the handling of merchandise in the building.

For this proposed intervention, the list of proposed measures includes creating a sunken courtyard around the building. This involves moving land, in turn resulting in improved conditions owing to the removal of humidity problems.

Using the ground-floor perimeter establishments for the ‘’commercial’’ uses requested by the programme will result in an intense cultural ring around the AHN and CCME deposits.

The perimeter position of the aforementioned interventions initiates a ‘Box in Box’ strategy, –creating a climate damper around the deposits– thus creating an environment where the temperature range is controlled, with the consequent climate and economic advantages.

The public use of both institutions is focused along the central axis of the building. A library, exhibits and a conference hall occupy this axis, an extension of the access, creating a relevant space where visitors can feel as if they are immersed in the middle of the whole intervention and surrounded by the deposits.
